Before signing, this form should be read carefully by the prospective Sponsor. It will be given to the Pastor where the Sacrament will be received. It is in lieu of any letter from the Sponsor’s Pastor.

Relationship, Function and Obligation of a Sponsor
A Sponsor contracts a spiritual relationship with the person being sponsored. This means that the Sponsor pledges to give good example by living and practicing the principles of the Catholic faith in daily life. In addition, the Sponsor will watch over the spiritual growth of the person sponsored by praying for them, by giving spiritual advice, and by contributing to their Catholic moral and religious growth. Therefore, a life-long contact needs to be maintained.

A Sponsor not only acts as a relative or friend, but also as a representative of the Catholic Community, testifying to the faith and intention of the person they sponsor. Therefore, those unaffiliated with the Catholic faith cannot be a sponsor.

A Recommendation
The Sponsor is advised, and strongly encouraged, to receive the Sacraments of Penance and Eucharist within the week before functioning as a Sponsor.
